North York Concert Band
The North York Concert Band is a community-based musical organization of approximately 45 musicians under
the direction of John Liddle. The individual members are from all walks of life, including students, teachers,
accountants, lawyers, retirees and general community members who are all enthusiastic performers.
The band performs a wide variety of concerts for the general public - in nursing homes, hospitals, children's
centres and vetran's facilities, as well as at outdoor venues and community festivals, both within and without
the boundaries of Toronto. The band was honoured to perform in Ottawa in April 2004, at a ceremony to
recognize Canada's first annual Holocaust Memorial Day, and in May 2004 the group performed a joint concert
with the Yorkminstrels Show Choir.
The encouragement and commissioning of works for band from Canadian composers is an important focus of the
group's repertoire. The NYCB has commissioned works from several Canadian composers and arrangers,
among them Eddie Graf, Gary Martin and Johnny Cowell.
